It's been one year since the Carpet Book and only half of my worst fears have come true. I can't find too many good fics, but they aren't ALL Post-DH fic, and that's good. I was quite worried about that. Still, I miss the golden age of fanfiction--- between PoA and before HBP was announced. That was the perfect time because the fandom was wide open. We could look back on the past in fiction and revise or add bits of it and also we could look to the future without canon guilt clouding our minds or fear of being told "dat no did happan!"

Honestly, fandom, can't we leave one-another alone? Doesn't anyone see that it's about as pointless as arguing over ice-cream flavors? They don't! And I could stand to take my own advice as well. If I want to join a tiny group of people that likes to bash R/Hr, I shouldn't get upset about people that like to get together and bash Lavender Brown. It's nothing personal.

((Keep Watching this space, for by the end of Pride month, there'll be a picture here to sum things up))

I've solved this problem by losing 99.9% of my interest in HP fandom. Voila!

Yeah. Ron/Hermione is still my OTP in fanon, but after DH it's almost impossible to find any fic that doesn't a) include Harry/Ginny and/or the rest of OBHWF, b) include those daggone kids, c) bash Lavender, Cho, etc. And none of the Ron/Hermione archives accept anything outside the box that JKR has drawn.

I miss the days when the only rule was that fics couldn't end with ships that contradicted R/H, unless they were both single or widowed or something and Harry was allowed be single or with someone who wasn't Ginny. Now everyone wants "canon compliance". I miss the days when I had to bookmark all the fics I wanted to read. Now I'm doing good if I find a good R/H fic once a month.

Are you dead serious? Augh... you know, I thought that might happen. I thought everyone would fall into lock-step with the canon. That's a little sh*tty, isn't it? Suppose someone doesn't like the way D.H ended? you're not into the kids, for example, right? Then it's like being stuck with one fanfic for the rest of their lives! It's like losing years of possible history (stories of them dating before book 6, just for fun, stories of them getting together in the 6th year, stories of meeting up after graduation) and for no good reason. Not even the most anti-shipper would want that for anyone.

What's the matter here? This is what happens when canon Nazi ideals are taken to the logical extreme. So much potential is lost. Is it because of fear of being told off by other shippers or is it because D.H destroyed their confidence in stepping out of line"? Or is it something more cynical and mean?

Last night I visited the Good Ship thread in S.C.U.S.A and found myself not despising the ship. Funny feeling. Now hearing this, I just feel bad. Did you read every story in the R/Hr archives? How about the dreaded fanfiction.net? You could search for fics with the term "A.U" but that term's dangerous. Too many authors take it literally and Hermione becomes a fairy or needs rescuing. Maybe a community is in order. I'd join, if just to contribute.

How's the fan art doing? If it's being wonky, I'd be more than happy to take non-canon compliant requests. It's not the best stuff around, but the characters are recognizable.
