harp: (Hanging Stars)
My sleep schedule is fecked and nothing ever looks as good as it did the night before. I wondered where my patience (recent thing) had gone, and then I realized just where (you know, Jack). Rrrgh.

I'm sorry my Northland lovers, but I've expanded my job search. Now I'm looking for hospital jobs in New York as well. Also considering Mortuary school very, very hard after speaking to a mortician who very strongly recommended I go to Worsham.

It surprised me when this came as a surprise to some people. Thought everyone knew that I was dating death. Then I remembered- I don't really tell people things, do I? =/ Thought I did. Guess I just dreamed that I did?

It looks good, and I really want to. Here are some of the cooler points:
*Still close to Chicago
*For housing, students get placed in funeral homes where they work and earn a little bit of money and get experience
*They prepare students for the National Exam
*It's a one year program and a one year "fellowship" of sorts.

Tuition issue is moot- I spoke to my parents, and they're all about extra education. I don't know what's stopping me. ... Well, alright, I do. And it's stupid.

Your thoughts* would be greatly appreciated, even the negative ones.

Doesn't look as bad as it did a few seconds ago...

*"if it makes you happy/is what you want" doesn't count as a thought XP
** Before you ask, FFS, no I have not ever seen Six Feet Under (got it confused with Medium that one time, Grue ^.^;;;) . Why is everyone jizzing all over this show? Is it something I "need" to watch the way I supposedly "need" to watch Glee?

Good luck. And I think the appeal of SFU is that there's quite a bit to it that's naughty.

Lawl. Oh, Barsuk, that's more of a deterrent for me!

I better see you on the creepy FFA tomorrow. I'm hiding in my room during my room mate's party and feeling like a smug bastard while I apply for a million jobs (and don't get a single one, lol forever alone).

Yeah, it never appealed to me (at all)

I'll try to make it. We've got people over in the afternoon (our monthly SF group meeting) and a friend's birthday party in the evening. Don't know how long we're going to want to stay, so maybe I'll make it before too late.

I hope I see you. And I don't mean to keep missing your Necromomicon challenges. I start in on them and then I get all "Arrgh crumble cry!" Iunno... maybe once I figure out wtf I'm doing...

My whats? I am confused. :o

The suggestions you had on the FFA- the ones for the illustrated Necromomicon?

Oh, the "Illustrated Guide to Parenting the Inhuman Child"? I think someone else proposes them, but I do cheerfully contribute to them.

And studying the dead? How did this not come up sooner!

Glad you're still here, though. I'll do my best to make it to the FFA tomorrow!

=O I considered mortuary school for a while there! Then I found out that the system is completely different in Canada, and I'd be dealing more with cremation than embalming, which had been a major part of the appeal to me. I've still thought about it, here and there. I think I'd really like being able to help people in what could be the most difficult time of their life...

Would you be interested in the Funeral Home thing as well, or just the dead people part?

Honestly, I think it's a great route to go, especially with a school so near by. You'll always be able to find work, for one thing (people never stop dying) and the pay isn't half bad. Apprenticing is a really cool and effective way to learn as well, and you'll have a million badass stories to tell xD

Also, Six Feet Under is amazing. It's one of the few shows I've seen that deals with so-called 'tough' subjects like death and mental illness with something approaching realism =3 Forget Glee, seriously - this season has been shit so far.

Just the dead people part. I like people when they're dead. I'd go for embalming so that I could be playing with needles and dead bodies all day long.

Sounds awesome, and you'd have the added artistic bonus of sewing people's heads up and making them look good as new (so to speak) for the viewing =D

Go for it dude, you've got a good deal here!

Go for it, dude.

Six Feet Under was cool at the beginning but eventually peters out into blah.

Oh weird; for some reason I totally thought you already were in mortuary school. Hmm.

Are you the driving sort? Because if you are, you could probably commute to that school without having to move to the burbs! \o/ (Actually, you could do it on public transit pretty easily too, although it'd be more like a two-hour commute so I'd bring a book or four.)

Date: Saturday, January 22nd, 2011 04:34 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] harpsi-fizz.livejournal.com
Naaaaah, I'd want to move. Living in a funeral home would be the best thing ever. Besides, I don't know how to drive at all.

Date: Saturday, January 22nd, 2011 04:40 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] violin-road.livejournal.com
Oh wait, I missed the part where you'd be LIVING in a FUNERAL HOME. That's pretty much the shit. I'd do that, too.

And hey, I just checked with another friend of mine, and that's where she's going :D

I refuse to watch Glee on principle. Everyone is jizzing all over it. I don't want to watch a bunch of 30 year olds acting like high school kids. Feeeeck that noise. Plus I hate vocal covers.

Except for the two I do like. Blackbird and... and there's probably another one. Anyway, point is, DNW their Lady Gaga covers. Fuck them.

Have no overall problem with mortuary school. Can't comment intelligently on your own situation without knowing what this purportedly stupid reason is that's holding you back.

Unrelated: Have you seen "Vampires Suck" yet?

Well, it's a stable industry; for the foreseeable future, you're not going to have to worry about people ceasing to die. So, if you get the education and the experience and work at it for a few years, you can do it whenever you want. Even if you get another job for a few years and then the economy takes a shit like it did a couple years ago and you're laid off, you can pretty reasonably find work.

Further, you can find work pretty much ANYWHERE you like. You should probably do some research, but I'm also going to guess that you're not going to have to deal with enormous amounts of competition; perhaps some, but not a shitload.

And, seeing as you don't have much of a problem about dealing with corpses, well, that eliminates the only real hurdle that most people have with the occupation.

Jason, you've pretty much just pushed the bar from 45% sure to 80% sure. One of my dreams is to live in upstate New York in the house I'm supposed to get when my dad goes, but I didn't know if I could find good work. But you're so right.

And I really do like handling corpses. Touching live people is what makes me kinda weird (you already knew that).

One thing about being a mortician - there will always be work to do.

I say go for it:)

Theodore! I miss you! I hope you're doing well in... chicago? I could have hung out with you if I'd known you were that close to WI. I just got back to New Hampshire after being in WI for the past couple months. :^P It seems like mortuary school is the place to be, judging by all these comments. Let me know how things go!
