After three days, my personal Denouement about FamilyGate. And wouldn't you know it? It was all because of a conversation I had with a transwoman.


(It's supposed to be happy and light-hearted, by the way. *shrug*)

I can still see the positives in the episode (not outing her, explaining vaginoplasty properly instead of going with "hacked it off") and I still think Ida was a mature, sympathetic character with assholes around her behaving like... well, transphobic assholes. And I still think Queer_Rage is 3.5 out of 5 times a basin of "..." and that the mods are ridiculous, sexist, concerned mother extremists.

But now I recognize my own bias and why the positives stick out for me, and this is why I can also see why the people who were hurt felt hurt and why they felt dismissed. Sometimes you don't want to have the edge taken off. Sometimes you don't even want them to rage and hate on what hurt you either. Sometimes you just want someone to say "Yeah, that part there is fucked up. Period.".

So I'm seeing all sides now and not really taking any.

Gay ally =/= Transgender ally. I have met plenty of LGB people who are rampantly transphobic.

Exactly. It took a hell of a fight to get the T added to GLB, and most of the time it's forgotten anyway.

Hell, even gay men that are all "Rargh Transsexuals!" Like in this one issue of "Out" magazine (the trans issue). The issue was lovely to me, but a gay man wrote a very angry letter to the editor.

But damn, I do so want to be loved that I'm very quick to put the label of "Ally!" to anyone that expresses an opinion other than "you should have the right to use the same public restroom as I do." =/ I know that I do it.
