Discussing old fandoms with new people (

There's a 6x9? I had no idea! Who are they? I'd Google it, but I know better than to Google those numbers in that order.
I don't know what 6x9 is for a good reason. The "obscure circumstances" I mentioned were these- I was introduced to Gundam in 2000 in high school as a freshman. Bear in mind, this was just around when it first came to Toonami and at a time when the internet wasn't the 24-hour resource thing it is now (for some of us with strict parents). Broadband was a privileged (one which I didn't have). Thus, for a lot of people, fandom was very limited.
The girl I adored (le siiiigh) and her best friend (who attended another school) were big Wing!nuts and both drew themselves in as pilots 06 and 07. Pilot 06 laid her claim on Trowa (which naturally made me hate him. Back off my woman, bitch ) and 07 declared herself forever 01's girl. And both of them had a pretty big hate!hardon for Relena*.
Oh, and might I add, I did not have access to cable TV.
So everything I know about the fandom was isolated to the conversations between the three of us, and all the facts I got were from them and whatever I could pull from those Geocities/Angelfire pages, which were about as stable as Daffy Duck. I don't know if you remember those.
So... I don't know if I qualify as a fan, but I do know about as much as a person can know without having ever seen an episode! So... what, is Duo always hanging around Heero? And for that matter, what's the deal with 3x4? I know I shouldn't not-care-for Trowa anymore, but since I never had a reason to like him, it never went away.
Oh, and Dorothy. ... Yeh. Let's not go into her.
*Yeah, I know what it looks like, but OC's are kinda like... blood. Blood's blue until it touches oxygen, at which point it turns red. OCs are OCs, but once they touch the internet and the writer tries to inflict their canon on other people, then they turn into Mary Sues. And they didn't... inflict it on me so much as invited me in :) I didn't get a Gundam, since I couldn't watch the show, but I was quite a helpful secretary!

Date: Monday, March 28th, 2011 02:33 pm (UTC)From:I'll read a fic if it's funny, so if it's funny, send it on over! Genfic is my favorite right now, so I'd love to see that. Maybe with hints of 2x4, o'course. That story that you can't find sounds priceless, too.
From what I see, Duo's the only one who got married in the end (Frozen Tears?). Man... I miss that guy a lot. I probably got a sense of who he was better than anyone else in our second-hand fandom. Let me guess- he's the most popular character, isn't he? Correct me if I've got it wrong here... loveable goofball who'll try to lighten the mood but will be surprisingly serious when it comes time to fight? Loyal bastard, bit of a wiseass, lots of fun, much needed cheer? Quick with a smile? That about right?
That's what I gathered anyway. For the sake of "06" and "07" and keeping some dark secrets, I won't go into the role he kinda fell into in our offline OC fandom. But I will say that he and BB High Schooler Harp OC were BFFs. "07", who didn't get my thing for Quatre, really didn't get why, when given the choice, I would gladly hand Quatre over to him and be Forever Alone. Thank goodness we were attending Catholic School and the idea of polyamory and OT3's were nothing we'd ever heard of or... well, just thank goodness.
Would I be interested in watching other... I'll really have to ponder on that. I'd have to watch Wing first. Anime's been a bit... difficult for me since I left high school and gained access to the thing that kills fandom for everyone- other fans. I'm still trying to recover from the irrational hatred of... oh, HELL, you were born in '84! You know what it's like! These damned kids sitting in the aisles of Barnes and Noble, walking around with their "learn Japanese" games on the DS, their pen pals in Japan, acting like they invented anime or whatever? Back in our day, we had to work to get our fix. All we had was Gundam and Pokemon, and we were greatful! *Goes on the rant about kids these days*

Date: Monday, March 28th, 2011 04:35 pm (UTC)From:Yeah, it's heavily implied in the supplemental manga (Episode Zero most prominently) and somewhat implied in the anime itself that Trowa is Catherine's little brother, who was separated from their family as a baby and thus never recognized them. It's one of the big reasons I was never able to ship them, cos... ew. (The other reason being, well, I shipped Trowa with Quatre!)
Trowa had so much more personality than that ;; screw "emotionless, personality-of-oatmeal," I'll take the shy, somewhat self-effacing boy with an eternal identity crisis.

Oh. Well... still, he had the heart of my first (and only) actual <3, so I was all "Grrr". Poor boy never stood a chance. ... FANDOM! Best friend/girl you love for 6 years crushes on and is "dating" character; irrationally hate said character, but also get pissed when you read Mary Sue fanfics where he is with another woman, the cheating scumbag (how can she still love him after that?!)! FANDOM!
EDIT: Wait, I forgot about the bloke I dated in college for a year. Guess I loved him. *Wonders how he forgot about dat*
