Discussing old fandoms with new people ( [livejournal.com profile] vincent_kinneas and doing it to my own house as not to clutter Pixie's journal.

Where were we? Number Shipping.

There's a 6x9? I had no idea! Who are they? I'd Google it, but I know better than to Google those numbers in that order.

I don't know what 6x9 is for a good reason. The "obscure circumstances" I mentioned were these- I was introduced to Gundam in 2000 in high school as a freshman. Bear in mind, this was just around when it first came to Toonami and at a time when the internet wasn't the 24-hour resource thing it is now (for some of us with strict parents). Broadband was a privileged (one which I didn't have). Thus, for a lot of people, fandom was very limited.

The girl I adored (le siiiigh) and her best friend (who attended another school) were big Wing!nuts and both drew themselves in as pilots 06 and 07. Pilot 06 laid her claim on Trowa (which naturally made me hate him. Back off my woman, bitch ) and 07 declared herself forever 01's girl. And both of them had a pretty big hate!hardon for Relena*.

Oh, and might I add, I did not have access to cable TV.

So everything I know about the fandom was isolated to the conversations between the three of us, and all the facts I got were from them and whatever I could pull from those Geocities/Angelfire pages, which were about as stable as Daffy Duck. I don't know if you remember those.

So... I don't know if I qualify as a fan, but I do know about as much as a person can know without having ever seen an episode! So... what, is Duo always hanging around Heero? And for that matter, what's the deal with 3x4? I know I shouldn't not-care-for Trowa anymore, but since I never had a reason to like him, it never went away.

Oh, and Dorothy. ... Yeh. Let's not go into her.

*Yeah, I know what it looks like, but OC's are kinda like... blood. Blood's blue until it touches oxygen, at which point it turns red. OCs are OCs, but once they touch the internet and the writer tries to inflict their canon on other people, then they turn into Mary Sues. And they didn't... inflict it on me so much as invited me in :) I didn't get a Gundam, since I couldn't watch the show, but I was quite a helpful secretary!

Personal Fandom~ No wars, just self indulgence!

Aaaaaaaah... yeah, unique circumstances indeed there. XD Well, for me it was a touch different. I'm Scottish, and over here Gundam Wing was only on Toonami as well, but I didn't have that channel; only a few friends with Sky TV did (satellite rather than cable). I was... 16, I think, when it first came on. Up until then, my experience of anime was, well, Dragonball Z. So yeah. But despite the initial trailer putting me off the show, me and my friend (the one who got the channel) got heavily into it, and I watched the majority of the show from him recording it for me, lol. Since then I've been a huge Gundam fanatic; moved on to all the other non-Wing shows after that. (Well, not all, since there's a helluva lot, but Ido my best).

Aaaanyway, back to the shipping! :p 6x9 would be Zechs and Noin. They never made it official, but Noin was devoted to him and he clearly had feelings for her, although he never acted on it (at least until the end of Endless Waltz, if you've heard of that?).

3x4; practically canon. Seriously. First time Quatre met Trowa, they almost fought (they were in Gundams at the time and had no idea who each other were), Quatre talked him down from combat and invited him back to his mansion/base. You get a scene of them making beautiful music together - no, literally, Quatre on violin and Trowa on flute if I remember right - then Trowa leaves at the end of the episode. Then this conversation (slightly paraphrased, although as close as I can remember it):

Quatre's servant/soldier/general lackey: Master Quatre, are you sure you can trust him? Knowing where our base is, he might come back to attack us.

Quatre: I almost wish he would; at least then I'd get to see him again!

...and that pretty much sealed the 3x4 deal. But it was built on quite a lot through the series as a whole.

And, uh, Dorothy... yeah, I don't think anyone liked her. :p Although just like Relena, she actually gets more likeable in Endless Waltz, honest!

TL/dr

Oh, heavens, second-hand fandoms! I know all about THOSE...

Okay, only sort of; I'm in the SCA. Our local group, way back when, had a very, very polarizing Baron and Baroness in charge. Basically they were ruining the party for everybody but their favorites and emotionally poisoning the group (I know several people who left never to return, which is a hella loss) Eventually several righteous folks got together to petition THEIR bosses in the society to review the situation. They ended up asking them to leave.
Now, i was briefly a member in the way back when, but didn't really have anything to do with them, but I did go to an event, and it was... kinda icky.
But; what I knew of the society was from the few people I knew who played, so it was kinda like hearing about a soap opera from folks who cared.

Oh, GW. I'll be honest, I never actually watched much of the series - I didn't have cable, which means I couldn't watch it on Toonami. But I was still a fan of it because that's what jr. high nerd girls did. So most of what I know from it is from Endless Waltz, a few manga I bought, and fansites/fic.

When I actually got around to watching the series... I realized it wasn't that good. I prefer Gundam: 8th MS Team. Much more realistic, better-written, and less prone to yaoi ship-wars and hate-ons of female characters simply by virtue of them being female.

Date: Monday, March 28th, 2011 02:50 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com
omg Gundam Wiiiing- one of my very first fandoms! :D Definitely my intro into slash shipping. I loved that show. I still love it - Gundam Wing holds a special place in my heart (and is probably a big part of why I love Gundam 00 so much now - it reminds me of Wing, but better). I, um, may or may not have seen the entire series and the Endless Waltz OVA/movie in both English and Japanese, and still own the Ground Zero, Episode Zero, and Blind Target manga... *shifty look*

Aaaas for pairings- as [livejournal.com profile] vincent_kinneas said, Trowa/Quatre (3x4) is basically canon. I always treated it as such, anyway.. xD I love that pairing, it's my favorite (they're also my favorite characters).

And yes, Duo is always hanging around Heero and pestering him. It's like, the basis of whatever relationship it is they have. XD Mostly it consists of Duo yammering on, doing whatever, Heero doing something crazy, then Duo complaining about how he's completely insane.

Dorothy was pure evil :| I hated her. And Relena, for that matter, who annoyed the hell out of me. It still takes just one mention of her to get me cringing at the memory of her "Heeeeeeroooooooo! Why don't you come back and kill me!?" in like, episode three or something ridiculous like that. She was HORRIFIC.

..*/randomly rambling about GW because she's feeling nostalgic, and using a Gundam 00 icon for maximum semi-relevance*

AH YES! Noin! Grown-up Hilde. I had no idea she was 09. ... Funny because when I told my cousin about her, she laughed and said "It sounds like my neighbor trying to say nine!" Until then I hadn't even thought about it.

Read... one fanfic about Duo and Hilde. I can't remember where it is now (probably dried up and died) but it was probably some kinda smutfilth.

I do know about the violin and flute duet. The 06 I went to school with (we'll just refer to her as "06" with quotes now) actually took up the violin when we went to high school and she said something about "accompanying Trowa". I'm still half convinced that's why she took it up. Oh... the days when being a crazy fan made you do harmless, relatively productive things!

Now some people were shipping QuatrexDorothy- is that right? Or was that just something I heard twice and thought it was prevalent? That was the whole reason for my not-quite-liking of her*. Well, that and the stabbing thing didn't help.

And what about the poor, overlooked Wufei? It seemed like everyone hated him. In all of the fics that I ever read, he was the one who had pranks played on him, the one who flew off the handle at Duo (in the way where we were supposed to take Duo's side). And shipping? Nobody shipped him with anyone but "Nataku" (Nantaku?) and maybe Sally Po.

Something else I never got- in our personal fandom and (it seemed) in the fanfictions, the guys all lived together sorta-kinda in a mansion. From what I gathered of canon, they were never even in the same room at the same time. This point was highly confusing to me and now I'm ready to address it.
Speaking of, y'never addressed the 2x4 thing ^.- Go on, give us yer thoughts!

*Man, did I have a thing for Quatre. Crying, defenseless effeminate Nancy-boys were my weakness. I even dated one all of freshman year in college- right down to the blonde hair and everyone convinced of his homosexuality.

There ain't no such thing as tl/dr on my LJ >C

Second-hand fandoms! That's the name for them! NYAHA! I think I will keep that name. It'll be the only kinda fandoms I get into from now on, too. Effing Harry Potter ruined everything. Feck other fans.

I know 'bout the SCA. We had a really cool chapter at our college and I fan'd them. Not enough to know how two people could ruin the group, though. Did they put harsh restrictions on... no, wait, tell me what they did.

Date: Monday, March 28th, 2011 10:58 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] vincent-kinneas.livejournal.com
Yeah, QuatrexDorothy was quite a prevalent ship; as far as I can see, the main reason for it was that the other four pilots had a het ship (HeeroxRelena, DuoxHilde, TrowaxCatherine and WufeixSally) so they were paired up by default. Although they did have some interaction at the end of the series as enemies, and it was made clear they actually knew who each other were, so there is some basis for it, I guess.

Yeah, Wufei got the short end of the stick, although one of his most popular pairing was 5x13; WufeixTreize. That one had a basis. When they first met, Treize challenged Wufei to a sword fight and won; Wufei got out of his Gundam to fight the guy since it was the 'honourable' thing. And they did have an interesting conversation during their final battle, which makes it at least plausible.

The 'guys living in a mansion' thing seemed to be a common conceit in fandom; I think it was meant to be after peace came, they all went to live in Quatre's mansion, although that has no basis in canon; it was just an easy way to get them all together.

One of the best Gundam fanfics I ever read was a comedy fic based at the wedding of Duo and Hilde, with Heero as best man. His speech started, "When I first met Duo, he shot me. Twice. And it hasn't gotten any better since then." I really wish I could find that fic, because it was utterly hilarious, but it was about ten years ago I read it and I have no idea where to track it down sadly. Aside from that, the GW fics I've read since then have generally been crossovers with Transformers, which happens to be my main fandom love. :p I did find a fantastic one of those, if you're interested, although if you're not into Transformers it probably wouldn't be your kinda thing, lol.

2x4, well, I could actually see that. Any time they were together in the show, Duo did seem really protective of Quatre, saved his life at least once too; early episode, Sandrock was knocked down on to a train track just as a large, mobile-suit-transporting train was about to smash into him. Duo used Deathscythe to grab and derail the train in a pretty cool scene. And they got on well together in person as well. So yeah, I could see it. ^_^

Would you be interested in watching any of the other Gundam shows, btw?

*Laughs* Nice. He does have that cute-wimp thing going for him alright. :p

I loved 8th MS Team, especially the focus on the ordinary ground troops for a change, rather than the usual super aces with incredibly powerful prototypes. Just a pity it was so short...

Oh, just a LOT of favoritism and generally being snots, and encouraging that in others. I cannot recall any specific examples, just that the group got really toxic.
Fortunately they got replaced by a couple of pairs of absolute sweethearts, so things got turned around by the time i (re)joined.

I can appreciate QuatrexDorothy on a domineering older womanx Submissive younger male level (I know they're the "same age" supposedly, but I don't entirely buy it; she seems way older than 15/16). But "06" was always going on about how Catherine and Trowa were brother and sister. Or might be brother and sister. I found that hilarious at the time with the few 3xCatherine sites and the pictures. "06" did not. Honestly, I still don't know what she saw in him. She painted him as this perpetually emotionless, personality-of-oatmeal, dull as watching grass grow mute. But she was quite "Goth" so... maybe they like that.

I'll read a fic if it's funny, so if it's funny, send it on over! Genfic is my favorite right now, so I'd love to see that. Maybe with hints of 2x4, o'course. That story that you can't find sounds priceless, too.

From what I see, Duo's the only one who got married in the end (Frozen Tears?). Man... I miss that guy a lot. I probably got a sense of who he was better than anyone else in our second-hand fandom. Let me guess- he's the most popular character, isn't he? Correct me if I've got it wrong here... loveable goofball who'll try to lighten the mood but will be surprisingly serious when it comes time to fight? Loyal bastard, bit of a wiseass, lots of fun, much needed cheer? Quick with a smile? That about right?
That's what I gathered anyway. For the sake of "06" and "07" and keeping some dark secrets, I won't go into the role he kinda fell into in our offline OC fandom. But I will say that he and BB High Schooler Harp OC were BFFs. "07", who didn't get my thing for Quatre, really didn't get why, when given the choice, I would gladly hand Quatre over to him and be Forever Alone. Thank goodness we were attending Catholic School and the idea of polyamory and OT3's were nothing we'd ever heard of or... well, just thank goodness.

Would I be interested in watching other... I'll really have to ponder on that. I'd have to watch Wing first. Anime's been a bit... difficult for me since I left high school and gained access to the thing that kills fandom for everyone- other fans. I'm still trying to recover from the irrational hatred of... oh, HELL, you were born in '84! You know what it's like! These damned kids sitting in the aisles of Barnes and Noble, walking around with their "learn Japanese" games on the DS, their pen pals in Japan, acting like they invented anime or whatever? Back in our day, we had to work to get our fix. All we had was Gundam and Pokemon, and we were greatful! *Goes on the rant about kids these days*

You didn't have cable either?! I don't know why this is such a ":D" moment for me but... it is! I thought I was the only one who grew up without cable.

Ha. Yaoi ship wars. From what I saw, there were no wars because this was before Livejournal was very big. The ships just sailed on their own, the bigger ones getting more fans, the smaller ones still existing but not attacked. Not like the Potter Ship Wars (one of which you~u~uuuu were involved in :DDD Beautiful Night).

But I'll agree on the female-on-female-because-she-is-female hate. Mostly Relena. Oh... so many Relena Hate Sites.

I like your talking! It's the only thing that lets me know you still like me and are not yet convinced I am teh d3vil of 3vil!

What's better about it? I'm all about characters- are there more character interactions? It seemed like with Gundam Wing they were just orbiting around, barely interacting with one-another.

I gather Duo has a very big mouth, then? Those cheerful types with the long hai--! Oh my God, I think I may have accidentally Duo Maxwell; I hope I didn't

That phrase! That drawn out "Heeeerrooooo come kill me" is what "06" was always so pissed about. Hey! Are Heero and Relena like more annoying versions of Deadward and Bella? 'Cause... LAAAAWL.

My OTP forevers in 00 is Neil!Lockon/Tieria. :D My other favorite pairings are (H)Allelujah/Tieria, Neil!Lockon/Setsuna, (H)Allelujah/Marie(Soma), and Lyle!Lockon/Anew.

...00 kind of owns my soul right now. XD

Oh, I'm sorry! I definitely still like you and don't think you are evil ♥ I'm sorry I haven't responded much xX; I had a midterm last week and was basically completely out of contact all week due to stress, studying, my aunt being sick, and all kinds of other stuff. xx;

00 has a lot more focus on the characters, and a lot of character interaction. It has all the usual holes in that due to the genre -- it's still an action series at heart and it knows it -- but it's very good, and the character development is honestly amazing, especially in the first season (I'm more "take it or leave it" on the second season, though I give them props for introducing a character I loathed when he first showed up and loved by the end of the season). I seriously adore almost all of the characters (with the exception of like.. two good guys and most of the villains, of course, lol). Their good guys are worth cheering for and are almost like a little family, with lots of implied off-screen stuff as well, and their badguys are worth yelling at and throwing things at the screen, which is a good sign I think. XD

Oh yeah, that's Duo to a T. XD *giggle* Duo's awesome. Hell, my bff has only seen about ten episodes of Wing and Duo pops up in our conversations sometimes... no matter what Gundam series we're actually talking about. XD He invaaaades the braiiiin- that his seiyuu is Toshihiko Seki may have something to do with this. XD

I haaate that bit, lol. Relena was so annoying. xD ...they kind of are, really, except that Relena's the stalker and Heero's mostly like "GET THE HELL AWAY FROM ME. ....FINE OKAY FINE. WHATEVER. STAND NEAR ME. FINE." and gets attached eventually, but I think it's more like Stolkholm Syndrome. XD

Butting in briefly, hope no one minds, lol xD Wufei I hated because he was basically a misogynist in the anime. He would yell on about how "women have no place on a battlefield!" and calling the (competent, amazing, role-model-worthy) women of the show "weak woman" and that kind of thing. It was seriously kinda gross. :\ I could never stand him because of that.

But "06" was always going on about how Catherine and Trowa were brother and sister. Or might be brother and sister.

Yeah, it's heavily implied in the supplemental manga (Episode Zero most prominently) and somewhat implied in the anime itself that Trowa is Catherine's little brother, who was separated from their family as a baby and thus never recognized them. It's one of the big reasons I was never able to ship them, cos... ew. (The other reason being, well, I shipped Trowa with Quatre!)

Trowa had so much more personality than that ;; screw "emotionless, personality-of-oatmeal," I'll take the shy, somewhat self-effacing boy with an eternal identity crisis.
