*Roy Blount Jr. will be at the Barnes and Nobles on May 17th! You better believe I'll be there to see him and get something signed. I might bring him a gift, too, if I can think of one. He's my very favorite pannelist on Wait Wait.

*Went to Evolution, bought a squid preserved in a jar of alcohol. He's my pet now :)

*Applying to mortuary school nearly complete. The medical forms require more shots, which is a right (expensive) pain. Got a tetanus shot, which did not hurt as much as I thought it would. Which is to say, it did not hurt at all.

*But! I finally hit on the way to write my essay! I just have to sit in the woods to do it. Funny story there- walking back after eleven, I hear something walking. Nervously, I stopped to listen, wondering what kinda scary thing it could be. What should come up about two feet from me and pause? Why a cute li'l skunk!
Of course, I just stayed still and waited for it to move, which it did after a minute. Wish I could've seen it better. I do believe this was my first ever encounter with a skunk.

*Texted Jeffie. Asked him if he thought I was secretive. He wrote back "um... YES", becoming another person on the list. This has elevated itself to meme status here in Harp!World. NC loves, why didn't anybody tell me they thought I was secretive before? And what is it that you want to know? I'm opening this post up to questions, because I just don't get what I'm hiding. I'll try to answer the questions as honestly as I can. The worst that'll happen will be that I'll give a joke answer and realize "oh... that's what they mean."

*LJ! Y U no work good? That Denial of Service attack was some kinda pain. Yet it never occurred to me to go to Facebook... haven't been there in a while. Guess I should go check on things.

*Oh, right, Tyler Tagged me so there's that. I answered these already, but I then re-answered some because my first answers were from a bad mood.

*Been drawing like a mad eejit lately. The most recent one was gift!art to an online friend from France. It's my favorite Femmeslash pairing (Hermione/Lavender) but it's kinky and naughty, so even though I love how it came out, I uploaded it to TinyPic and it's only available on request. Don't want people thinking things...

Anyway, here's some art. It's all Vampire RPG Fan Art since I had a list of art ideas for it.

Just after calming down from the panic about the Australia floods, now nature's putting her teeth to New Zealand? What the Hell? And Google, for once, is being spectacularly unclear with my quest for information about the specifics on Auckland where my brother E lives.

I just sent him a gift box, too, for V-day/Easter. He was all excited about getting to interview his favorite punk star last I spoke to him, but there's no news on his journal, which hasn't been updated in a while. Is he alright? His parents and room mate? His cats?

Eli, please, please say something if you're alright.
If anyone knows any specifics... I don't know if I could even deal with the thought of it.

2011, please don't take Eli away.

Edit: Have it on good authority that Eli's area was spared the disaster (Thank you, Grue!*). I'll be watching his journal with anticipation.

*I mean for the information, not for not hitting Eli's town with disaster. Not that you could do that.

Iunno, but I get a "patient, polite, cheerful, quiet" vibe from the kid, which is saying something considering the role models he'd have growing up- Crankypants, Bossyboots, Blabbermouth, and ... Sapphira. Maybe there is hope. Alas, there is no place in the RP word for a Dhampir-Tentacled boy.

Have you gotten a chance to listen to Lady Gaga's new song?
I sure have. (Excess stuff is behind the cuts; feel free to skip)

I felt like Lady Gaga wrote it just for the rainbow crowd. She did, of course, but I mean as a gift to us.
Society + Gay = OTP )

Because of all of that, at some point in my mind I twisted "Born This Way" into something it was never meant to be. I wasn't thinking of it as a song at all, but as a weapon.
Rainbow Ray Gun! )

I wasn't thinking of myself or my musical tastes, but about what other people would say and think. I count three ironies.

The lyrics leaked a few days ago. I read them and instantly I was apprehensive. I mean, even I couldn't ignore how... how "in your face" they looked. Oh, Gaga, how can you make this work? I thought. I wasn't excited. I was disappointed by how heavy-handed it was. How would this be received?

As it dawned on me that I'd have to listen to it, too, I began to feel afraid of how much I'd like it. My musical tastes vary, but if I don't like a song, it'll take an act of severe psychology for me to give it a second try. If I didn't like Born This Way, I'd have to wait another lifetime to get another mainstream radio-played song that mentioned GLB explicitly. And I could just forget about hearing a song which says "transgender".

Why this song was so important )

Finally, as I tried to draw, I thought "screw it, don't save it. If you build it up, it'll never live up to your own hype."[2] So I played it for the first time.

My eyes were tearing up. Not kidding.

There's nothing to say about the song as far as I'm concerned. I don't want to build it up or try to sell it to people who have not heard it. Hell, I don't even want to sell it to people who heard it and find that it isn't pleasing to their ears because of their musical tastes.

I like it. It's relevant to me. Therefore, this song is for me. That's all.

I will say that reading the lyrics cold and judging the song based on just that (even if you plan to change your mind and give it a chance after) is a bad idea, and I regret my impatience. With the music, it makes so. Much. Sense.[3]

A lot of the fans on [livejournal.com profile] thehausofgaga were disappointed with the song, which I understand. It's more happy, more 90's pop, and that doesn't sound good to everyone's ears. And heck, there are a lot of Gaga's songs that are popular that I just don't like (like all but four of "The Fame Monster"...). I feel really sorry for the fans who were disappointed in it because I saw how long they waited and how excited they were. Letdowns suck. It's not as though they can help not liking it. We can't choose what we like (as Gaga said!).

Hey... y'know, I just realized that if I hadn't liked this song, I wouldn't have disappointed her! Even if it was a gift! 'Cause the gift is saying "you don't choose what you like, you just happen to like it because that's how you are!"

Oh, Gaga, you brilliant Mama Monster who loves us all so! I probably won't like a few songs on the new album either :3

That being said, there will be people that I'll have to defend this song to. Not the ones who say "I don't like this song" but the people who have commentary beyond "it's not my musical style."
Warning- If you're on my Friends List, NONE of this applies to you. ) As for me? The song helps me. I like it and when I'm upset, I'll probably need it. And I'm not the only one who feels that way. Dislike Born This Way all you want, but please keep it at "I don't like it ". Remarks about the lyrics being "bad" are about as called for as taking the "I believe in and love you" note someone's parent/guardian put into his backpack and saying "this is drivel".

[1]First idiot who says "What about Katy Perry?" in seriousness and isn't trolling (who doesn't love a good lol Trolling?) about it is going to get an earful. Seriously- love it or hate it, if you don't understand that "I Kissed a Girl" is offensive, you need to ask someone.
[2] By the way, let me say that on reflection this is the kind of song that shouldn't be built up. Ever. It's a song that should find someone who needs it. If it's built up, it won't work. You need to be alone and it just come on. Then it's just like a needed voice telling you "hey, look, you're ok. ... And shoot, I am really glad it didn't find me like that. If I was feeling miserable about my issues and turned on the radio and this came on and I heard it for the first time, I'd cry hard.
[3]I'm glad I read the lyrics first because i would've been actual crying if I didn't know already what was coming somewhat. Though I wouldn't understand half of what she was saying.

I'm probably late as flip on this. Forgive me; I generally get my news from Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me about a week late. You've probably heard about the flooding in Queensland already.

Thing is, I've got a frie- a bro out there in one of the tinier towns and I'm really worried. Not just about her, but about her husband, her step-daughter, her fish (they're her darlings), and her neighbor boy that she's really good friends with. Really worried about neighbor-boy, actually. I just looked on one of the maps and it looks like her town was hit pretty hard.

I should've known- her last post on the 3rd was talking about the non-stop rain and how people were having to fly to work. Though in a way, I should be happy, I guess. If she knew how bad it was on the third, maybe it means she and her family were getting flood preparation in place by then. She's got one of the quickest minds I've ever encountered, and as for planners, you couldn't find better ones outside of trained pros.

'Course I'm just saying the things I want someone else to say to me. I'm so worried. Even if she's ok, I'm wondering about that neighbor boy.

Yeah, so...if you're able to send a donation, any at all, won't you? For the people whose own "Grue"(s) aren't so fortunate or resourceful or tactical practical. But money's really tight right now, so if all you can spare are really, really powerful good thoughts, that's good, too.

Except for people who listen to NPR! In 2009, I downloaded the NPR top thirty songs of 2009 and I’m still blown away by all of them.
*I’d never play “Sleepyhead” or “Knotty Pine” for anyone because I have a hard time imagining I’m not the only one that doesn’t find the voices irritating
*Wilco (The Song) and Heads Will Roll sound like they’d be boring, but they’re wonderful
*I can’t even listen to French Navy because it makes me so happy that it hurts
*They grow on you. I wasn’t sure about Summertime Clothes, but it’s growing on me. Suspect I might’ve just psyched myself into it.
*Andrew Bird’s “Oh No” is another one of those songs that depresses me but I keep going back to it.

Foaming Rabid Canon Thumper(HP) :
1. An individual with the irrational, obsessive paranoia that somewhere on Earth, there is a person deriving happiness from the idea of a romantic relationship between Harry and Hermione.
2. An individual with the irrational, obsessive paranoia that somewhere on Earth, there is a person deriving happiness from the idea of a romantic relationship between a pairing that J.K Rowling has not confirmed as Canon either in books or interviews.

I reach out to the rabids here and ask a simple question- what is it to you? What is it to you if someone likes Harry and Hermione? You have gotten your way. Is it not enough? Do you not understand that at this point you anger is literally nothing more than being upset* because someone else might be happy?

I've invited a few people here to comment, but I swear on all that is holy that I will do everything I can think of to stop this from becoming a war zone, even if it means throwing my hands up and saying "fine". There's no wrong way to ship (in this post) but can't we try to be civil? I know we can. Just look at Harp and Heron!

Ships are about the love between two (or more) characters. Shipping is about getting together with people who think the same way and enjoying your similar interests together. Real fans celebrate their ship with fun and sharing "squee" because their enjoyment is independent of the kid down the block liking another ship.

The people I am seeing are people who can do nothing but make the fandom into a pissing contest. There is no enjoyment, only competition. They belittle not only people ("Delusional!") but concepts that could possibly make these people happy (such as a simple eight second dance scene). They only get pleasure from their ship by picking it up and using it to beat up another ship. They are not fans in any sense of the word.

*Note: I will gladly and without question accept and not argue with "I just like being cruel and nasty to people who don't share my ship views" because I appreciate the honesty

Also, I don't care if "so-and-so started it back in 1942". The wars are over; we all know what's canon, and that's just the way it is whether you got your way or not.

P.S- Free quick-and-dirty art in this post to anyone who wants it, regardless of ship

At the moment, I'm really, really enjoying Paul is Undead. At first, I was annoyed with the awesomesauce zombies, but I got over it as soon as Paul started pounding on John's door and demanding he "take his medicine" and John shouted at him to "shut your gob". I think I love this book. Made me love George "Pisces Fish" Harrison even more (he's adorable). Made me want to become a zombie!

Art from my R.P "Walking the Ghost" set in a town in 1977. My partner, J.M, plays Mrs. Williams, a 50 year old immortal... thing. She can dissolve into a pool of sentient blood. She only needs a little bit of her to make the shape of a human, so most of her (practically a lake of blood) is in the basement of her boarding house.

I play James Cupid, grad student at the Grove Center for Paranormal Investigation majoring in hex, jinx, and curse studies. He has mild paper-based tactile ESP, meaning that when he touches paper, he can feel the emotions left behind by the last person that had contact with it.

When I was in Women’s Studies class, I did an assignment that had me studying the advertising in porn magazines- not Popular ones, but ones that were... what do you call it, independently owned? They weren’t published locally (probably?), but I did go to school in the Midwest in a town that had about 800 people, so I’m guessing that the customers were predominantly white men. Maybe a few college students.

I recall that day well. My friend Dan Norris drove me to Book World and said that he wasn't going in with me.

"Because I don't want to be standing next to someone who looks like a twelve year old while looking at porn." he said.

Anyway, here’s my fun beta question: Chances are you have something... oh... fetishizable about you. What is it? Yes, yes, I know that anything can be fetishized, but I mean something in the niche market- big feet, bear-like, ethnic background, height, something. And how do you feel about the fact that you're fetishized for this? How do you feel about the hypothetical person who is all "unf" for you and what do you think of them (remember- they aren't the same thing!)?

I want to post this up in a discussion community, but I want to beta it here first so that someone can tell me how to re-word it.

I suspect, on reflecting a little, that it might be off-putting question to some people. I say "suspect" and "some people" because I honestly don't see a problem with it. Is that because it's not offensive or because I'm desensitized to being fetishized? In the case of the latter, do people have a right to get angry with me for asking, or is it like the human getting offended by the talking dog from the puppy mill asking "which one of your kids do you think would cry the most pitifully if they were taken away from you suddenly and without warning as infants?"

If you know what I mean.

I think I've got... two? Three glaringly obvious things to be fetishized for? I look like a loli/shota, I wear glasses, and I'm a vampire.

Feel free to PASS THIS ON!!

ETA: This prevents the "repost to FB/Twitter" ticky boxes from being displayed when someone comments on one of your posts. It seems to work, UNLESS the person is viewing your page in their own journal style, in which case it might not work.

ETA2: Inserting the code below in your custom CSS box reportedly works for more kinds of journal styles, including custom ones (this courtesy of xnguard):

.b-repost-item, FORM#qrform > TABLE[style="border: 1px solid black;"]:last-child TD[style="vertical-align: top; text-align: right;"]:first-child { display: none !important; }

you better believe I did this. But what the hell is up with my LJ making it so that I can only post this Friends Only by default? I mean, yeah, F.O is best for safety, but I don't want to make my art!journal friends only. Ron/Draco is a really tiny ship and sharing of it is caring.

A Softer Rage

Last night, [livejournal.com profile] mr_liam_to_you was nice enough to let me talk to him non-stop
(almost literally) from 3:50 AM to 8:30. I'm quite sure I woke up at around this time yesterday... but I haven't been to sleep yet. Christalmighty... sleep was the one thing I could never fight. Can go hours without peeing, can do ok without eating, but my body always loses to the fight with sleep.

I've never been up for 24 hours before. And look! Liam an' I had a brain baby! [livejournal.com profile] queerrage_lite! My communities never get very big, so I do not expect much.

Conor Lively is a softer version of rage )

Inception was just aight, Flist. It was clever as hell and fun and I thought several times "I am very much enjoying myself" but since everyone was gushing so hard it built it up too much. So it was just aight.

Gonna make like the Cayman Islands on Tuesday and see Salt.

Photobucket
Like how her hair came out. Codename for this picture is "Beezus Quimby TVS". Oh, God.

And I won't go
I won't sleep
I can't breathe
Until you're resting here with me

I won't leave
I can't hide
I cannot be
Until you're resting here

SO HAPPY!

The [livejournal.com profile] ronbigbang is holding their "drabbles based on art" contest, so I submitted a few old pieces of Ron!art, not really expecting much. Then when I had a look today, someone wrote a story based on the one I was most pleased with- "Fear and Anticipation in Ron Weasley"!

Finally! :D

I don't expect it to go very far, but I'm so very happy that someone was nice enough to drabble based on that old series. If I'm allowed to vote, though, I'll be voting for number five. Just... because. ^.-

I don't know how they do it, but this site will Analyze your Writing

I only got three results from various RPG styles, and I'm only eager to share one and a half of them. Please post your results while I stand here and become annoyed for no good reason.

I don't write like
Stephanie Meyer, at least

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

Now explain this curiosity:
Nathaniel "Scarlet Letter" Hawthorne writes like Charles Dickens
Leo "War and Peace" Tolstoy writes like Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur "Round the Red Lamp" Conan Doyle writes like Charles Dickens
Charles "A Message From the Sea" Dickens writes like Leo Tolstoy

I am not making this shytt up either. ... I thought I could get in a few more before I got a repeat. But yeah... Charlie-boy was the most sosistent.

There's a lot of Dickens around.

Just for fun, I'm gonna copy-pasta my favorite thing ever ("The Rime of the Ancient Mariner") and see who Samuel "Albatross" Coleridge is.

James Joyce. Alright then.
----

So I've been reading The Marriage Mess since last night and I came to chapter seven. All I have to say is NO PLEASE. (It's fifteen times worse if you've been reading the whole thing and kinda are used to the characters.)
